Balatro

9/10PC, PS5, Switch

Overview

Balatro takes the familiar language of poker hands and turns it into one of the most compelling roguelike deckbuilders I have ever played. Every run feels different, every Joker combination opens up new possibilities, and the "just one more run" pull is relentless.

What Works

The genius of Balatro is that it teaches you poker strategy by subverting it. A pair of 2s can outscore a royal flush with the right Joker setup. The game rewards creative thinking and system mastery over raw luck.

The Friends of Jimbo update adds even more variety. Cross-game Jokers are a fantastic idea and the balance is surprisingly good for a free update.

The Loop

Each run takes about 30-45 minutes, making it perfect for both quick sessions and marathon plays. The difficulty curve is well-tuned — early runs teach you the basics while later stakes demand genuine mastery.

Verdict

An essential purchase for anyone who enjoys roguelikes, card games, or just well-designed systems.

One of the best games of recent years.

Updates

Friends of Jimbo update

The new collaboration update adds themed decks from other indie games. The Vampire Survivors deck is hilariously broken.
